Musicians

Sunny War (c) Florencia P Marano

It’s no secret that great art comes from the margins. From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Los Angeles-based street singer, guitarist, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War has always been an outsider, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting.

As a young black girl growing up in Nashville, she searched for her own roots, looking first to the blues she heard from her mother’s boyfriend, and learning from a local guitarist. Moving to Los Angeles in her teens, she searched for herself in the LA punk scene, playing house shows with FIDLAR, and shoplifting DVDs from big box stores to trade at Amoeba Records for 80s punk albums. But here too she found herself on the outside, working to bridge her foundation in country blues and American roots guitar traditions with the punk scene she called home. She first made her name with this work, bringing a wickedly virtuosic touch on the fingerstyle guitar that sprang from her own self-discoveries on the instrument. But her restless spirit, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother, led her to Venice Beach, California, where she’s been grinding the pavement for some years now, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost.

Michael Jost

Born in Dreieich, just outside of Frankfurt Germany, guitarist Michael Jost (pronounced ‘yoast’), found his way to the bohemian Venice Beach boardwalk, in Los Angeles California, where he now lives and makes music.

Owing to Michael’s unique European heritage, his rigorous classical training, and his 21st Century American experience, you can hear something very different in his passionate, Spanish-style guitar. Michael’s travel companion is Miss Lucy, a Flamenca guitar built by Tomas Delgado of Candelas Guitars. She has a strong character, with a warm and beautiful sound.

Michael has a unique sound. His music is a journey in time and space fueled by his passion for music and his instrument. His influences are very multicoloured and involve different styles, continents and time periods from Paco De Lucia and Stravinsky to Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.

No two of Michael’s live performances are ever the same, drawing from his recent albums, Zeitlos and California Burning, as well as unreleased songs from his upcoming album, Concierto.

Zeitlos is a timeless and unique blend of acoustic, classical and flamenco styles, entwined with the sounds and soul of Venice, California. His earlier album, California Burning, is a psychedelic fusion of electric and acoustic guitar.

Billy Stobo

Born from the tradition of bringing good stories to music, Brother Billy’s first release “Don’t Fall Asleep on the Tracks” has conjured up spirits of the past with tales of jilted love, pointed historical commentary, and folks having raucous good time.

With the evocative puberty anthem “Red Ribbon” to the cynical retort of “Your Grand Design” he gets right to the sweet, the sad, and the naughty.

His Hopeless Choir is a revolving door of many talented musicians that give a little to help a lot in lifting up the spirit of his oh-so-spirited music.

From the snow-capped mountains of Oklahoma to the pale-painted deserts of Louisiana – from the coal-firing cost of California to the sweeping serenity of New York City – everyone could use the kind of smile that comes from spending a little time with Brother Billy.

Cristina Vane

Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, Cristina Vane is taking the town by storm with her unique blend of blues and folk. Originally from Europe, she draws from such a great host of influences that it is impossible to compare her music to any one artist. That being said, she draws decisively from country blues, delta blues, and American folk music, creating her own flavor of the blues. Whether on the Venice boardwalk busking by the beach or on a stage in Mississippi, her signature resonator bottleneck playing and powerful vocals are unmistakable and unforgettable.

Before falling in love with the blues, Cristina spent her childhood and adolescence studying classical voice, music theory, piano and flute, ever consumed by music. She has love for many kinds of music, ranging from baroque classical to punk and metal. This theme continues throughout her career today; while she predominantly plays slide guitar, she employs fingerpicking, acoustic, electric guitar techniques, as well as clawhammer banjo playing.

Cristina had been performing in the Southern California area for nearly four years when she embarked on a 5 month tour, summer of 2018. While Cristina spent summers gigging in both New York and London previous to her move to Venice, she had never traveled the United States extensively and found her tour to be a personal and musical success. Her effervescent and edgy personality make for entrancing live performances, which she has honed with hours of practice playing in venues across the country as well as busking for the public on Venice Beach for several years. It is safe to say Cristina lives through music, it saturates her life and is, for her, a necessary vehicle for expression.

Bittersweet Highway

Bittersweet Highway

Living and traveling along the edges of America, theirs is music that rises from the fringes, in place and in style. It crosses genres and blends the sounds that have influenced these two as individuals, combining to create something strikingly original. It is no wonder they call their particular brand of music “Borderland Americana.” This is music that is thought about, and music that makes us think. More importantly, this is music that urges us to feel. Live, Bittersweet Highway’s relaxed and intimate rapport with each other and their audience allows for a wonderfully interactive experience that speaks to the journeys of the heart, the bitter and the sweet that are scattered along the road of life.

Tony Mason

Tony Mason

TONY MASON re-defines the term “One Man Band”! A singer/song writer, who traveled to Vermont by way of New York City basket houses in Greenwich Village, the 1960’s folk revival, and tours of New England in clubs and schools as well as the College Coffee House circuit. Tony gets excited with the new electronics that enable him to play all the parts – and then sing, too! It has been said of him – “His barrage of charm, skill, syncopation and exuberance completely captivates the audience.”

During this time, he was part of couple of bands, the Mojo Four and Children of God. Performing in Boston, Tony played in a duo called Tony and Eddie opening club shows for Odetta, Chuck Berry, J. Giles Blues Band and Kenny Rogers and the First Edition.

During the 1990’s, while living in Portland, Oregon, Tony developed an interest in MIDI and synthesizers. He worked and developed arrangements for many of his songs and the one-man band grew out of these creations.

Golden Buddha

It’s a long story …

They are the originators of the Mantra-Rock sound of the 90’s which has now infused itself into the consciousness of the new millennia.

With Teo Castro on Guitar and Vocals, Billy Stobo on Drums, and Jeffrey Dimmick on Bass, Golden Buddha becomes a mixture of ancient tones and modern sounds, interwoven with funky tribal rhythms and a hard biting edge.

  • The pulsating grooves of the bass are sensual and erotic.
  • The unrelenting drums are thunderous and melodic.
  • The soaring guitars and mystic vocals are penetrating and chaotic.

Years of playing clubs and festivals throughout Europe (Montreux Jazz, Burg Hersberg, Paleo, etc.) with psychedelic icons such as Damo Suzuki from “Can”, Hawkwind, Gong, Guru Guru, Mann, Faust, and Birth Control, as well as touring The States with bands like Jane’s Addiction , Queens of the Stone Age, Perfect Circle, Audioslave, Incubus, Kings of Leon and more has galvanized these three men into one simple and powerful musical force. And, it has given them the great opportunity to share their music with thousands of thankful people …

The Zephaniah Stringfield Band

The Zephaniah Stringfield Band

Performing with raw intensity and moving dynamism, Zephaniah Stringfield sings stories about his travels from the SF Bay Area to New Mexico and beyond, weaving biblical references and archetypes of traditional folklore with stories of highways, girls and greyhound buses. His songs echo bluegrass and country music, rock-a-billy and the blues, but his clever lyrics and up-front delivery are both modern and relevant.

It is music both hauntingly familiar and uniquely his own.

Paracosmic

Paracosmic is a collaborative project of musicians from various parts of California and the United States. The band’s sound can be described as a funk-based improv flow, incorporating rock and blues with a keen taste for the psychedelic soundscape.

Forming through the deep seeded dreams of 4 individuals, Paracosmic began in 2015 in Los Angeles through mutual friends in the southern California music scene and festival circuits. Since then, the band has grown to a 6 piece and along with playing several staple venues in Los Angeles, are making their way onto Festival line-ups with their favorite artists.

So what does the name mean? Paracosmic is the adjective of the word Paracosm, which is a detailed, imaginary world. Within that concept the 6 musicians aim to take you on a very lucid yet imaginary funk voyage through your mind and reality simultaneously for a rockin good time!

Keep your ears peeled for PARACOSMIC.

Los Pochos

What is a Pocho? One who lacks proficiency in Spanish but is of Mexican descent. So with that out of the way who are Los Pochos?

Los Pochos is a three Spanish guitar and vocal collaboration born in Venice Beach, CA. Band members Isaac Irvin (from El Paso, Texas), Michael Jost (from Frankfurt, Germany) and Rick Boston (from Alberta, Canada) started playing together in Venice for fun, but soon were being asked to play at parties and art shows.

Isaac Irvin sings in Spanish and English and this combination makes for a great blend of Tex Mex and south of the border vocals. Michael Jost is an accomplished flamenco and rock guitarist and is also a record producer with his own eclectic Radio Venice weekly internet broadcast. Rick Boston is a multi instrumentalist, musician, film composer and record producer, now enamored with his Spanish gut string guitar.

With Mexican rock songs such as Negra Tomasa and Cuban traditional El Quarta de Tula the three pochos dig into these Latin sounds with the fun of a Manu Chao but the instrumental skill of a Gypsy King. Well, almost!

Wolf Schubert-K

After a ten-year-long, search-driven recovery, Wolf returned with his “Sacred Blues” album in 2009, clarified and much more thoughtful.

After a total of 4 albums, “Free Spirit”, a rough folk album with guests from the singer/songwriter scene, including his wife BINE MORGENSTERN, is out now.
